Tips for Choosing Wood Flooring in Santa Clarita

Tips for Choosing Wood Flooring

Hardwood is by far the most popular flooring choice among Santa Clarita homeowners today.  Top quality hardwood flooring instantly adds beauty, charm, character, and value to your home. Before you invest in a flooring upgrade for your home, you should check out the following tips to ensure you get the wood floor that best suits your family and design style.

Strips vs. Planks

Hardwood floors are available in a variety of board widths. Narrow planks are the best option for smaller areas since they give the appearance of openness and space. Large planks will give your home a more rustic feel. Parquet squares, although not as common as strips are planks, can add an air of formality to a space.

Selecting the Right Hardwood Species

Each hardwood species has its own distinctive grain and color. They also vary widely in durability. Species such as oak, cherry, or maple are known for their hardness and are perfect for families with young children or pets. If you are aiming for a more dramatic look, turn to exotic woods such as Brazilian cherry or mahogany that offer rich colors and grain patterns.

Color and Texture

Hardwoods come in a vast selection of colors. Choose floors with a blonde tone to give your home a light, airy feel. Deep, dark colors will add an air of richness and sophistication.

The texture of your floor should complement your overall design. A smooth floor with a glossy finish pairs well with a contemporary style. Hand-scraped or distressed hardwood adds timeworn character to a more casual design.

Solid vs. Engineered Hardwood

Just as the name implies, solid hardwood comes from a single piece of wood. Engineered hardwood is made from thin layers of hardwood that are bonded together in a cross-grain fashion. You should keep in mind the following when deciding between solid and engineered wood floors:

  • Solid floors can be sanded and refinished multiple times if damaged by puppy claws or children’s toys. Engineered floors are harder to repair and can only be sanded a limited number of times.
  • Engineered floors are less susceptible to temperature and humidity changes than solid floors.
  • Solid floors must be nailed or stapled into place. Some engineered floors can be glued or “clicked” into place.

Cost

The cost of hardwood flooring averages between $3 and $10 per square foot. After figuring out your budget, ask to see samples of those that fit into your budget. Hiring a professional flooring company with design assistance can help you to make the best decision that will fit right into your price range.
