Examples of Repairable Damage

There are many ordinary wear and tear issues you can address with your engineered wood floors, including:

  • Fine scratches to the veneer
  • Shallow gouges in the veneer
  • Shallow dents in the veneer

As long as the damage does not go too deep, there are home remedies for this type of scuffing and damage.

Examples of Damage Beyond Repair

Once damage to the engineered floor becomes deeper, you’ll find it more challenging to apply a basic home remedy to fix the damage. Because engineered wood floors are not solid wood, if the damage exposes the multiply layer below, then calling in a wood refinishing team is recommended.

Simple Remedies to Restore Engineered Wood

You can use these simple remedies to keep your engineered wood floors looking their best:

Dents

Dents are caused by compression to the wood via force from something like a high heel. In this case, you can follow these steps:

  • Apply a few drops of water to the dent
  • Cover the area with a dry, clean natural fabric cloth
  • Use your iron to warm the area without touching the rest of the floor

The water and warmth should swell the dent, creating a more level appearance.

Gouges

If you gouged your floor trying to move furniture or dropping something heavy like a hammer, you could restore it using a wax-based wood filler. The wax products come in “crayon” form in various wood colors, which makes it a lot easier to match and apply:

  • Rub the crayon over the hole to fill it
  • Buff the wax with a buffing cloth until it reaches the level of shine desired

You can also use a non-acetone wood filler, but they require application with a putty knife and sanding, which can damage the surrounding floor.

More Involved Remedies to Restore Engineered Wood

Scratches can be repaired, but require a little more effort:

  • Wipe the scratch with a clean, cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to remove dirt and grime
  • Use a color-matched floor wax product and apply the wax going diagonally along the scratch to fill it
  • Remove excess wax to make it level with the floor
  • If you remove too much, reapply the wax and continue to wipe and refill the area until it is smooth and even
  • Buff the wax to match the finish of the floor

Keep in mind the more scratches you fill in one area, sometimes the more noticeable they become.

How to Prevent Scuffs

Taking a proactive approach to floor care is the best way to avoid scuffs. Use these scuff prevention tips:

  • Do not wear shoes in the house
  • Add felt protectors on furniture feet
  • Never drag furniture across the floor
  • Use a mat or floor protector under chairs with wheels
  • Sweep weekly to remove grit that causes scratches
